The Day Jakarta Went Mod!

The biggest surprise I’ve had since I’ve started this blog is how Mod culture has spread throughout the World! The idea, which was started by a few mainly working class British teenagers back in the last century, has survived the years and has gone Global!

Back in early May of this year I received a mail from Sarah Glandosch, telling of a May Day Mod rally she was organizing- ok…- but reading on I read that the rally was to be held in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta. Indonesia! Jakarta! Mods!  That on its own would make any grey head Mod proud! Wow! A couple of scooters and a few Mods riding around Jakarta…Wait Alex, did you say a couple of scooters?…’Err..yes’- On your bike! 2000 scooters, spiced up and styled  to a quality that would make many a scooter boy cry in envy. Well over 3000 Mods, (some in parkas),  participated in the event! On Sunday, May the 29th, scooting off from local Mod hangout, The Rolling Stone Cafe, (a good address for any Mods visiting Jakarta), they paraded their rides through downtown Jakarta. I wish I had been there to see the sight!

The day was finished off with a concert from local Mod band ‘Innocenti’; whose song “We Are the Mods” underlines the linked clip- Nice music mates!
The event has become a yearly event, so if you’re in Jakarta in May 2012, put the  May Day rally into your diary.

  5. There are mods all over Italy. My eldest daughter's boyfriend is one! He's also a dj playing mostly ska and walks around in Clark's desert boots most of the time.
Take a look at this advert for a mod shop in Caltanissetta, Sicily:
